Taqueria el Mejor ~ Visalia, CA

This will probably be my last post for at least a couple weeks, I'll be touring the motherland of all taco's...Mexico. So look forward to some great reviews and pics from the place that started it all.

Taqueria el Mejor

It says a lot when a place like this impresses amongst a throng of other tried and tested mexican restaurants. Truly, I was impressed. Walking in I was greeted with a friendly smile and witty sarcasm from the two cashiers (I think they might have been the owners).

This place also doubles as a spanish deli and tamale factory...and they cater...and they deliver. Amazing.

*Asada, Carnitas y Barbacoa

I was pleasantly surprised to find barbacoa as a choice of meat for my taco. I fell in love when it was recommended to me by the owner of Gallego's Bro's deli in Mar Vista. I basically have used their barbacoa as a standard. With that said, Mejor is a serious competitor. If you've never had barbacoa..I recommend it. Think beef brisket...but juicier. When you cook pork in the same manner as barbacoa...it's referred to as carnitas.

They literally pulled the carnitas off the already cooked shoulder to use for my taco, yet I was a bit worried because they used the carnitas at the deli that's been sitting under a heat lamp. It was all good though, no tough meat. I was glad they dug into that shoulder with the tongs to get to the tender, juicy insides. As for flavor, I wouldn't say bland, but I'm definitely not saying flavorful. It was good enough though, I enjoyed it.

The carne asada was good for a little taqueria here in Visalia. The mixture of tender juicy bits of meat with crispy charred bits added a very nice contrast that went well for the taco. Next time I'm back I'll probably order only the asada...

I was glad to see an authentic taqueria of this calibur open up downtown. I recommend this place if you need your quick fix and don't want any of the fuss a restaurant could bring.

La Taquiza ~ Los Angeles

La Taquiza is a place that makes me happy for starting this blog.  I probably would have never eaten here, let alone heard of this place, if it were not for this new hobby/obsession.

So....it is my pleasure to introduce you to La Taquiza.

La Taquiza

The specialty of this place are their mulita's...  sorta like a cousin of the taco.  Think quesadilla but with the small tortilla's and any choice of meat.  But I didn't come here for these.  Next time though...they looked great, and everbody raves about em.

Oh, and before I go on, let me tell you another little secret. Their tortilla's are HOMEMADE.  Mmm mmm mmm.  So fresh, so good.

*al Pastor y Asada

Their asada has a very unique taste.  I have never come across this flavor before in my taco life.  I think they might have used a soy sauce or teriyaki as a base for their marinade.  It was good though, but different.  They cut the asada in thin strips so its not chunky like most other spots, and also has very tender texture with no charred or crispy edges to be found.  The taco's come with only one tortilla...it being homemade, they're able to stand up to its contents with no problems.

After eating one of their pastor taco's, I was so amazed at how good they were that I ordered two more.

SO.FUCKING.GOOD.  By far the best pastor I've tasted, thus far.  This is what this blogs all about people.  Finding the best of the best.  Coming across this taco was like finding the holy grail for me.  SO.FUCKING.GOOD.

They cook the pastor on a spit, right in front by the grill.  The flavor was the perfect balance of sweet, savory and spicy.  The slow cooking on the spit creates a juicy, tender texture because the juice slowly falls down the meat, basting itself with gravity.  The contrast between the tender juicy meats with the crispy charred edges was, quite simply, perfect.  I topped the taco's with onion's and cilantro, and added their salsa verde.  I didn't think it could get better, but adding the mild, cooling verde with the pastor turned my taco into something else.  Something really good.

OK, enough of this crazy talk, time to move on to my sisters meal.

*Fish and Shrimp taco's

I didn't get a taste of the fish, but from what she told me, it tasted good.  3/5.  It seemed to have a higher proportion of batter than fish.  Not that good of a sign in my book.  The taco's come topped with cabbage, guacamole and sour cream.

I was able to get a couple bites out of the shrimp taco.  It was good.  I'm not a big fan of shrimp so I'm not even gonna front that I know what I'm talking about.  But, it did taste good, and you know what,  that's all that matters.

And now the conclusion...

I don't know where to start.  Home made tortilla's, al pastor on a spit, taco's came with no toppings, awesome salsa bar, friendly service....jeez, I think I might have found it.  The reason I was able to visit this place (La Taquiza is in downtown LA) was because I was catching a train to Visalia.  I'm currently here in Visalia now, and am heading back to LA this sunday.   Guess where I'm going when I get back?

Taco's Estilo! Taco Truck ~ Wilshire Center, Los Angeles

So I get back into my car after eating at R & R and find another taco truck on the opposite corner.  How great is LA?!  Two taco trucks within walking distance from each other.  Simply amazing.

Taco's Estilo!

"Dos taco's de asada, por favor, para aqui."  I says
"No asada." says taquero
"Uhhh, Carnitas then."
"No carnitas sir."

Hmmm, I think to myself, maybe this place is really good, considering they're out of 2/3 of the "Holy Trio".  So I order two pastor tacos instead.

First off, they give me one tortilla for the taco.  Totally took me by surprise.  Second, they there was an over abundance of cliantro.  I really don't mind both of those too much, but once I took that first bite of the pastor...I realized that this place is really  mediocre at best.  The flavor was standard pastor, but nothing worth writing home about.  The taco didn't fall apart, despite the single tortilla, and the cilantro wasn't as strong as I thought it would be.  The only thing that really stood out was their salsa roja.  Whooo weee it was hot and spicy and delicoius! Their only saving grace in my book.

I'll be giving them another try, and hopefully I'll get my asada and carnitas tacos instead..

R & R Taco Trailer ~ Wilshire Center, Los Angeles

You think you've seen it all, then you run into a taco stand like this...

First off, is that an LED scrolling sign. HOLY SHIT.

OK WAIT. IS THAT KOREAN?! IS THAT A FROG? WTF?!

Seriously, I FUCKING LOVE THIS.

R & R Catering - Taco Trailer

I had initially planned for a taco nightcap at Yuca's while in Los Feliz, but after I found it closed, I took the long way home, knowing I would inevitably run into a taco truck or two.

While stopped at the corner of 3rd and Vermont, I see what looked like a taco truck, but had Korean scrolling on the LED. Then the magic word appeared...TACOS.

*al Pastor & Carne Asada

A definite plus about this place is they serve their tacos without any toppings, their salsa bar being well stocked.

These were some good tacos. So good that I didn't even need to put salsa on them.

R & R's pastor is definitely above average. The seasoning was right on and very memorable, with a tenderness and juiciness that added an experience that I could simply describe as happiness.

*Wow, look at that juice. Seriously guys, click on these images because I finally have them linked to their bigger and better versions.

Like their pastor, the asada came proper. Definitely not the best I've ever had, but an asada that is stable. I feel like R & R's asada is like that stable friend who will always be there when you need him.

The flavor was standard. A simple marinade of lime juice and herbs & spices, and cooked to tenderness, with no charred crispy edges.

So, how about that sign huh? I've never seen anything like it. I'm sure there's a couple of you who will not be surprised...but you know what? This taco lover is...and if I'm back in the area, I'll make sure to give this place a visit...if not for the taco's...at least to see what other shennanigans they might pull to lure future customers.

Don Felix Meat Market ~ Culver City

With the economy in the toilet, White Godzilla and I took it upon ourselves to say "fuck it,"and have a good time. We did this by purchasing two round trip tickets to Cancun, despite lack of work and tons of bills. We have talked about this trip incessantly now for about a year, and I am glad to say we are finally (barely) able to back pack through the Yucatan.

After crunching the numbers - the plane tickets, hostels, transportation, food, booze, I was left with the minimalist amount of money possible for a person to live in a two week period. My obsession with finding the best taco's in LA had to take a back seat.

But that's when I remember meeting a fellow by the name of Don Felix.

Don Felix Meat Market

With a crispy twenty dollar bill and high hopes, I set off to the meat market section of Don Felix. They had everything you would expect from a carniceria: marinated carne asada, marinated leg and breast chicken, pastor, chorizo and other meats that I'll leave for the more adventurous eaters.

I was able to walk away with a 1/2 pound of the marinated carne asada, 1.5 pounds of the breast chicken, and one whole chorizo that weighed about 2 pounds. Total cost? $10.50!!!

I made lotsa taco's :)
*clicking on any of the images will now bring up a bigger and better looking version!

*Carne Asada

I cooked the asada in the oven for about 30 mins at 350 degrees. It turned out very juicy and tender. The flavor was amazing. I've tried to mimic an authentic style carne asada before. I didn't even come close to this. Let's just say it tasted legit. Better than anything I could have done up...even with the help of internet recipes.

*Marinated Chicken Breast

The chicken was good. The 1.5 pounds gave me two butterflied breasts. The first one I grilled, second one I baked. I liked it better baked. I tasted hints of tumeric and cumin in the chicken, the marinade being a melange of herbs and spices.

Unfortunately, I was so hungry making my chorizo and cheese taco's that I wasn't able to take pictures. I just dug into those things.. Let me tell you though, they tasted great. Standard chorizo. Overly juicy to the bite, and flavors reminiscent of Mexico.

Don Felix has broken my carniceria cherry. I've never had the pleasure of enjoying already marinated meats from a mexican meat market, so I can't say I'm an expert in the field. But you know what they say, "you never forget your first."

From this point on, all will be held by this standard.

Honey's Kettle Fried Chicken ~ Culver City

It's no secret that filipino's love them some fried chicken.  I'd go as far as saying we love them equally as much as black people.  I know it sounds unimaginable, especially if you've never been to Philippines or do not know any filipino families.  But let me tell you, if you go to any potluck or family event where there's filipino's and food, you will undoubtedly see fried chicken on the table, right next to the pancit, rice and lumpia.  Dave Chappelle said it best when he described his affinity towards fried chicken as a "genetically predisposed" condition. I hear ya brotha, I have pictures of my mom eating friend chicken at a party while she was pregnant with me.  Genetically predisposed?  Fuck ya!  That shits in mah blood!

Honey's Kettle Chicken

A fancy version of KFC.  Sorry folks, I really don't have that much good to say about this place.  The price you pay for the food you get, just outrageous.  And all three times I've been here I've had the worst service.  It's like they could give two shits that you're in there.  And I'm not gonna say the reason either...I think you know what I mean if you've been here before.

Ok, to be fair, that chicken right there was pretty good.  Seriously, I would love to give this place a better review.  It's just that service once you're in there, coupled with the fact that the cost is outrageous.  I have to minus 2 points right off the bat with that.  And usually I don't care about such things...because in the end its all about the food.

2.5 outta 3 for the chicken, zero on everything else.  But don't let that stop you.  Give them a try at least once, their chicken is pretty good.

Taco Life ~ KLSX

KLSX, which houses radio personalities Tom Leykis, Adam Corolla, and Frost Heidi and Frank will be going off air this Friday at 5 pm.  I don't know the details as of yet but I do know at around that time, KLSX will be turned into a "Top 40" station named AMP Radio.

I fuckin hate this.  Do we really need another lame ass top 40 station?  Isn't KIIS FM with that douche bag Ryan Seacrest enough?  Do we have to hear Rihanna on another station?  She's already all over the TV and Internet...now she's gonna be on 10 channel's instead of the regular 9.  WTF?  I'm assuming its over money, top 40 being cheaper than radio hosts, but come on.

Let me add that the only reason I'm pissed is because I am a regular listener of Frosty Heidi and Frank.  These three are straight up FUNNY.  Frosty is fat.  Heidi is a lesbian.  And Frank is an asshole.  Their "spitfire" commentary on culture and society has had me laughing for many years, and I'm sad to see them leave.

God, please find them a new job where I can listen to Frank clown on cake eating Frosty, with Heidi laughing uncontrollably at every quip.

Tender Greens ~ Culver City

What can I say about this place that hasn't already been said about the recent "locally grown, organic living" lifestyle boom that started at the turn of the century.  Yes, Tender Greens offers locally grown fare, (from all over California, mind you) and most of the ingredients on the menu are organic.  Now, I'm not going to use this revew as a podium to preach my somewhat mixed feelings about this recent trend of the "buy local" and "eat healthy" lifestyle.  Shoot, I lean towards that direction every now and then.  But like any other red-blooded, country grown American, I have no problem digging myself into a fat tri-tip that is neither organic nor locally grown.  Actually, what most people don't know is the meat they buy at their local Ralphs or Pavillions is actually California grown, where I grew up.  Thank God for such a fertile valley here in California.  *End shameless central valley praise now*

With that off my chest, let me say that I'm grading the food based on...the food, minus all the hoopla about it being organic and locally grown.  And yes, I do understand that there is a different in taste.  I just won't let it get in my way.

Tender Greens

Photobucket

We arrived on a gloomy sunday morning with my sister and friends freshly hungover and ready to grub it down.  Of course, there was a line that went out the door, this place frequently packed because of the word of mouth praise.  Not to mention this is a "modern cafeteria."  You order your meal in front, go down the line and watch them prepare your food, then at the end register you give them your money and they give you your food.  This "cafeteria style" line of preparation can create some long lines for the uneasy, very hungry folk.  Yours truly included.  Funny thing, I've been here so much that none of it is new, so while waiting in front of the vegetable part of the line, some random outta nowhere asked Patrick, "Are you waiting in line?" I'm like, "No we're not, we're just picking our nose here while we wait for our food.  Fucking douche bag."  Yeah, I was hungry and sick of wating.  Little did I know that this was his first time to Tender Greens, so he didn't know the routine.  My bad.  So who's the douche bag now?  I even called him a rookie after the fact. Hahah I'm a dick.

Photobucket
*Happy Vegan.  Or as we like to call it, Buddha's Feast

Patrick was very ambitious and got the Buddha's Feast.  Included is tabbouleh, green hummus, pasta pearls, farro wheat, young kale and tender greens.  Truthfully, I don't know what half of what I just typed down is.  But I did get a taste of a few of the things.  Definitely fresh to the taste, but it seemed more like a bunch of sides on one plate for me.  Not to mention, no pita bread?  I see hummus, albeit green, and all you get is that day old hard bread they call "rustic bread."  Eh, I'll let the vegans keep this plate.

Photobucket

Photobucket

*Side of the Line Caught Ahi Tuna

He also ordered a side of the Line Caught Ahi Tuna.  It's weird because they have this dish written as "albacore tuna" on the menu at their location.  Anyways, he had a couple pieces left over and he offered me a bite, I gladly accepted.  I must say, even after I finished my meal, the tuna was very good. They seared the tuna which left the inside raw, like sushi raw.  I don't even like sushi and I still enjoyed it.

Photobucket
*Oxnard Vegetables Hot Plate

Of course, Sara ordered the grilled vegetable plate.  I ordered this plate a long time back when I was in my "let's not eat meat every single day of my life" mode.  From what I can remember, it tasted all very good.  Like with most of their plates, the vegetables are prepared simply.  They soak the veggies in olive oil, then lightly season with salt and pepper.  Next they grill and serve em' up.  The veggies come fully cooked, but with a stiffness that's snappy.  I bet they blanche their veggies before hand.

Photobucket
*Angus Flat Iron Steak Hot Plate

And now to the real deal, my plate, the Angus Flat Iron Steak.  What they don't tell you is that it's actually a flank steak, its most common application, the london broil. They quickly sear the steak over a very hot grill, and is cooked medium rare to maintain its tenderness and flavor.

Photobucket

I've always enjoyed getting this.  But this time around, I noticed they had an overstock of already cooked steak sitting in a bowl under a heat lamp by the meat section of the line.  I knew this was gonna be bad from the start.  For the sake of speeding up the line, they cooked extra steak.  I don't really mind this but shit, throw that puppy back on the grill for a couple seconds.  Once I was sat down and finished taking pictures, my "steak" was warm.  More on the cold side.  That shit seriously put a damper on the whole experience.  I will add that this was the first time this has happened to me.  I've been here enough so I'm gonna let this one slide.  But you better come ready next time I arrive TG.  Seriously.  Or I'm gonna Yelp the shit outta you.

Photobucket
*Side view of the outside seating area.

This review wouldn't be complete without mentioning their sides.  Their dishes include a choice of 5 different salads, all of which are above average for a fast food restaurant.  My favorite salad is the baby spinach with goat cheese and hazelnuts, topped with a cabaernet vinagrette.  Also if you order the hot plate, you get their very soft and fluffy yukon gold mashed potatoes.  This shit reminds me of some bomb brutal I used to get back when I was younger and had this country bumpkin ass white friend.  His mom made mashed potatoes like no one's business.  The taters at TG aren't goopy, it's very soft and if stuck on a fork and held upside down, it will stick to the fork.  Honest to goodness authentic mashed potatoes.

I've been a frequent customer of this place since its opening.  Besides the under-a-heat-lamp fiasco with my steak,  things will remain the same.  But seriously TG, watch your back.  Or I will break your neck ala Yelp.

Super Taco ~ Woodlake, CA

It's crazy how far people will go to satisfy a craving.  Here in LA, I have to drive 30 mins south to Torrance for some proper Hawaiian style food.  For Italian deli sandwiches, I drive 20 min's to Santa Monica.  I mean, I could easily get these things here in Culver City and not be in a car any longer than 5 minutes, but sometimes you're willing to go that extra mile for a place that specializes in such things.  Places where only their food will hit the spot.  For many Visalian's, that place is Super Taco in Woodlake.

Super Taco

When I was just a little baby in the taco game, I was in awe of this place.  Just getting here you drive through beautiful country and farm land silhoutted by the Sierra Nevada's.  Super Taco itself is a little shack that probably can only fit about 25 people inside at once.  I used to think that since Woodlake was full of mexican migrant workers, the food was probably as authentically mexican as you could get.

So, coming back with all this taco experience under my belt, I knew I'd be able to give a more objective review of this place, rather than my old romantic view from the past.

Photobucket

Photobucket
*The Trio - Carnitas, al Pastor, Carne Asada

The carne asada was as good as I remember.  Chopped bits of carne asada that tasted great.  Seriously.  Hints of lime from the marinade created a very flavorful juiciness to the meat.

The praise ends here though.  My pastor wasn't anything special.  Very forgettable.  And my Carnitas?  I don't know about that pico de gallo they put on top of very average grade, almost flavorless carnitas.  There was bell peppers and pickled carrots in the gallo.  Not a very big fan of that.

Also, I know I shouldn't grade a place on their salsa but, I can't help it.  The salsa here just plain out sucked.  They only give you one kind of salsa and I didn't put it on any of my taco's, even though I really wanted to.  I looked around and of course, there wasn't a salsa bar either.  Very disappointing.

Photobucket
*Lengua Taco's

My cousin Patrick always gets lengua for his taco's so I was excited to hear what he had to say.  "Where would you rate this place, outta 5?"  I ask.  He gave a very definitive "3."  He enjoyed them, but nothing special.  Maybe if he had some good salsa???

As far as taco's goes, my old romantic view of this place clouded my perception of how good the food here really was.  With what I know now though, the taco's here were nothing special.  The asada had to be the highlight, but I could truthfully say that it would be hard to stand up with the greats here in LA.

Photobucket
It's cool though.  You'll always have a place in my heart Super Taco.
